Despite Elon Musk’s relentless chatter on Twitter, how well do we really know the guy? I mean, we know him as this genius, electric-car mastermind who is probably an alien disguised as a human coming to us from another planet. His relationship with Grimes pretty much helped confirm it.
There’s a reason why Mr. Musk fascinates us, and his life story is no less intriguing. Musk ditched Stanford after two days, he was bullied as a kid, he created his first video game at the age of 12, and he bluffed when he said he would donate money to save world hunger.
Let’s get into it.
Who Is Elon Musk?
So, who is this extra-terrestrial master mind? Let’s start from the beginning. The first time Elon Musk laid eyes on a computer, he was 10. Fascinated by the bulky square, he learned to program shortly after and developed a code for a game called Blastar, a shooting-spaceship game which he sold for $500.
His great ideas didn’t end there, and, gradually, along with his younger brother, Kimbal, he created a full-on arcade near the boys’ schools. But their plans were eventually scrapped because their parents didn’t sign their legal consent to get their boys a permit. The brothers had to suffice with selling chocolates to their classmates instead.
He Dropped Out of Stanford After Two Days
In 1995, Elon Musk enrolled at Stanford to study for his MA in applied physics, but despite his good intentions, he was too busy developing and couldn’t attend full time. Musk applied for academic deferment and said that he would come back to school in half a year if his other endeavors didn’t work out.
The chairman was a bit skeptical and said that he doubted he would ever see the young genius again. He was right. Musk ended up creating Zip2, a company that was later bought by Compaq. After the success he found with his new project, there was no reason for him to return to school.
He Helped His Cousin Get Into Solar Power
In 2004, on his way to the Burning Man festival, Musk, along with his cousin Lyndon Rive who was a successful software engineer himself, began discussing the desire to create something meaningful. Musk suggested to his cousin to consider working on the advancement of solar power, and over the course of their drive to Burning Man in the Nevada desert, the idea took form.
Along with his brother Peter, Rive created SolarCity, which became the country’s largest solar provider. Elon Musk joined as chairman. Clearly, something at the festival sparked Musk’s imagination. He called it “a very creative place.”
The Real-Life Iron Man
When Iron Man’s writer and director Jon Favreau was looking for ways to make the character of Tony Stark – the clever and skillful protagonist of the comic book and movie franchise – a bit more human like, actor Robert Downey Jr. told him he should talk to Musk.
Jon ended up shooting parts of the second movie at Musk’s SpaceX factory, and Musk discovered ways to replicate Tony Stark’s rocket-designing methods on a computer screen by passing his hands across a sensor.
He Has a James Bond Style Car
Musk owns a bunch of cars, but arguably his coolest one is the Lotus Esprit from 1977’s James Bond movie: The Spy Who Loved Me. In the movie, (spoiler ahead) the car turns into a submarine after the agent and his beautiful female partner in crime fly off a pier to escape the bad guys.
The stunt car, also known as “Wet Nellie,” collected dust for years in a garage before being sold in 2013 to an anonymous person at an auction in London. Later, after Musk revealed that he was the secret buyer, he said he was deeply disappointed that the car didn’t actually turn into a submarine. He released a statement saying: “What I’m going to do is upgrade it with a Tesla electric powertrain and try to make it transform for real.”
Where Is Elon Musk From
Elon Musk was born in 1971, in the apartheid-era of South Africa. His dad was a man named Errol, who at the time owned an emerald mine in Zambia. Musk admitted to having a rocky relationship with his dad. Today, they’re said to be completely estranged.
“He was such a terrible human being,” the engineer told Rolling Stone back in 2017. “My dad will have a carefully thought-out plan of evil. He will plan evil … You have no idea about how bad. Almost every crime you can possibly think of, he has done. Almost every evil thing you could possibly think of, he has done.”
His Dad’s Horrible Deeds
Indeed, Musk’s dad was an evil man. He shot and killed three people, as well as had a baby with his own stepdaughter. The three men he shot had apparently broken into his house. He was later tried for manslaughter. But after pleading self-defense, he was acquitted.
In addition, Errol told to The Daily Mail that he had a child with his stepdaughter, Jana Bezuidenhout. Apparently, Errol wed Jana’s mom, Heide, when Jana was three. The couple were married for 18 years, and Jana and Elon are like brother and sister. Errol later said that he had a child with Jana “in the heat of the moment.”
He told The Daily Mail: “It happened one evening when Jana’s boyfriend threw her out of the house and she had slept over at my house. You have to understand — I’ve been single for 20 years and I’m just a man who makes mistakes.”
Elon Wasn’t the Greatest Husband
Elon Musk married his first wife, Justine Wilson, in 2000. They tied the knot around the same time his online financial-services company – X.com, joined another company called Confinity, which ultimately, became PayPal. The two were together for eight years and gave birth to six kids.
As it turns out, they didn’t divorce on the best of terms. Years after their divorce was finalized, his former wife released statements about her marriage to Musk. The headline read: “‘I Was a Starter Wife’: Inside America’s Messiest Divorce.”
“I’m Your Wife, Not Your Employee”
“Elon’s judgment overruled mine,” his first wife, Justine Wilson told Mary Claire in an interview. He was constantly remarking on the ways he found me lacking.” Finally, she told him off, saying, “I am your wife, not your employee.”
Being the “sensitive” guy he is, he would apparently reply, “If you were my employee, I would fire you.” Not only that, but after their first child, Nevada, died of infant death syndrome, the Tesla CEO called his wife’s outspoken grieving “emotionally manipulative.”
He Married and Divorced His Second Wife – Twice
After calling it quits with Justine, Elon Musk began seeing actress Talulah Riley. And after just ten days together, he proposed! Funnily, throughout Musk and Justine’s divorce proceedings, Riley and Justine began to grow close.
“Throughout the divorce proceedings, his fiancée and I discovered we liked each other,” Justine revealed. A friend of Musk’s first wife observed that their developing friendship was like “a French movie.” Justine even wrote the following email to Riley: “I would rather live out the French-movie version of things, in which the two women become friends and various philosophies are pondered than the American version, in which one is ‘good’ and one is ‘bad’ and there’s a huge catfight sequence and someone gets thrown off a balcony.”
Perhaps Justine and Riley’s fondness for one another was a sign that Riley and Musk wouldn’t last very long. They two tied the knot in 2010, but just two years later, Musk announced that they were getting divorced. He announced the news on Twitter and wrote:
“It was an amazing four years. I will love you forever. You will make someone very happy one day.” As it turns out, the person Riley would “make happy” turned out to be Elon Musk, again. They remarried in 2013 but divorced yet again in 2016.
Elon Musk Has Kids With Weird Names
In 2020, Elon Musk and the singer Grimes introduced their son, whom they called X Æ A-XII. A year later, they named their second one, a baby girl, something a bit less weird: Exa Dark Sideræl (still weird…).
On the flip side, the children Musk has with Justine Wilson have relatively normal names (relatively). Their kids are called Griffin, Kai, Xavier, Saxon and Damian. While there are no Johns or Davids in the bunch, it’s still nowhere as weird as X Æ A-XII.
Musk Banned Someone From Tesla
In 2015, a man named Stewart Alsop wrote an open letter to Elon Musk on the website Medium, which he titled: “Dear @ElonMusk: You should be ashamed of yourself.” In the letter, he complained about Tesla’s poor organization at their Model X launch event.
He said that the event started two hours late, that there wasn’t any adequate food, and that he had to deposit $5,000 in advance to attend it in the first place. In response to the man’s complaints, Musk canceled the guy’s Model X order. Later, Alsop responded: “I am a little taken aback to be banned by Tesla … I am mostly sorry not to be able to participate in the automobile revolution that Tesla started.”
He Loves to See Himself on the Screen
Like a lot of influential people, Elon Musk enjoys seeing himself on screens. Any screen for that matter, big or small. Musk landed two lines in the film Iron Man 2, and he has also voiced his character on South Park and The Simpsons. He’s also voiced “Elon Tusk” on one of his favorite shows – Rick & Morty.
Other roles include a part in The Big Bang Theory, in which he played a man who volunteers at a soup kitchen. Recently, he hosted an episode of SNL, where he was dressed as Wario and cracked cringy jokes. He also went to Mars with Pete Davidson.
He Is Against Unions
Apparently, Elon Musk will do whatever it takes to stop his employees at Tesla from unionizing. According to the New York Times, it was ruled back in 2019 that “Tesla had illegally fired a worker involved in union organizing and that the company’s chief executive, Elon Musk, had illegally threatened workers with the loss of stock options if they unionized.”
Can you guess where the richest man on Earth threatened his employees who wanted to unionize? You guessed it! Twitter. The CEO tweeted: “Why pay union dues & give up stock options for nothing?”
He Got in Trouble With the Government
Elon Musk has gotten into trouble for tweeting things on Twitter countless times. It’s kind of funny (and smart) that he would later buy the website. In the fall of 2018, after smoking on Joe Rogan’s podcast, he tweeted: “Am considering taking Tesla private at $420. Funding secured.”
The 420 tweet had some serious consequences, because the CEO hadn’t actually secured funding. And, obviously, lying about stuff like that is a huge no-no. Elon Musk was eventually overthrown as Tesla’s chairman and handed a fine of $20 million.
How Much Is Elon Musk Worth?
Elon Musk said that he would donate $6 billion to end world hunger. But, alas, he didn’t. Responding to one CNN screenshot that read: “2% of Elon Musk’s wealth could help solve world hunger, says director of UN food scarcity organization,” the billionaire tweeted:
“Can [the U.N. World Food Program] describe on this Twitter thread exactly how $6B will solve world hunger, I will sell Tesla stock right now and do it.” David Beasley called his bluff and responded by outlining exactly how they would use the billions. Elon, who is worth around $239.2 billion, never responded back.
Elon Musk’s tweets are iconic. The CEO has posted all kinds of wacky stuff, including an emotional vow saying he would make Coke truly classic again. He also posted an image of Bill Gates next to a pregnant man emoji with the caption: “in case u need to lose a boner fast.”
Other wacky tweets include a screenshot of the App Store showing that Trump’s app Truth Social was one of the top free app downloads. He commented: “Truth Social is currently beating Twitter & TikTok on the Apple Store,” “Truth Social (terrible name) exists because Twitter censored free speech,” “Should be called Trumpet instead!”
He Nearly Sold Tesla to Google
According to Musk’s memoir titled Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, the CEO nearly sold Tesla to Google for $11 billion back in 2013. At the time, Tesla’s future seemed bleak, so Elon approached Google’s co-founder Larry Page and suggested he take over.
Musk’s proposal was that Google purchase Tesla for $6 billion and that Musk would invest another $5 billion to expand the factories. Ultimately, the deal was called off after sales of a certain model (the Model S) began to pick up. Nowadays, it’s estimated that Tesla is worth around $100 billion.
Space Exploration Technologies
Needless to say, Elon Musk is fascinated with outer space. Therefore, in 2002, he established Space Exploration Technologies, or in short, SpaceX. Elon Musk believes that our species’ survival relies on our ability to evolve into multi-planetary species.
However, current rocket launch technologies are extremely expensive. But over time, and with the launch of the three different Falcons (one in 2006, one in 2010, one in 2018), the CEO was able to accomplish his dream.
He Ran a Nightclub to Pay Rent
When he was young, Elon Musk and his roommate Andeo Ressi, both students at the University of Pennsylvania, were thinking of ways to pay rent. One clever way they came up with was by renting a big house and turning it into a nightclub.
According to Vogue magazine, Elon and Andeo’s makeshift club wasn’t a small setup; in fact, it could hold up to 1,000 people. “Some nights, I’d be like, ‘Where’s Elon?’ and I’d go up to his room and pound on the door, and he’d be in there alone playing a video game,” Ressi revealed.
Musk Started His Own School
Elon Musk formed his own school at SpaceX’s headquarters. He calls it Ad Astra, which in Latin means “to the stars.” Musk’s children, as well as some kids of SpaceX employees, study there. According to the tech website Ars Technica, the school first opened its doors in 2014.
Elon founded the school to provide his kids with an education that “exceeds traditional school metrics on all relevant subject matter through unique project-based learning experiences.” Apparently, the kids work mainly in groups and a strong emphasis is placed on math, science, engineering, and ethics. There is no grading system at the school. Over 400 families have applied to the school, but as of now, only 50 students go there.
A Kanye West Fan
Weirdly enough, Kanye West is one of Elon Musk’s inspirations. In 2018, when the billionaire CEO was asked during a questions and answers session at South by Southwest: “Everyone in this room is inspired by you – who are you inspired by?” Musk straight away answered: “Obviously, Kanye West.”
This isn’t anything new; in fact, Elon Musk has been praising the rapper in public for years. There was even a brief bio of the rapper in Time magazine’s 2015 list of the 100 most influential people.
Praised and Recognized for His Great Works
In 2010, Elon Musk was awarded the FAI Gold Space Medal. He was granted the honor for designing the first developed rocket (by a private person) to reach orbit by the Federation Aronautique Internationale.
In the winter of 2020, Elon was also awarded the Axel Springer Award. He then ranked number one on the list of Businessperson of the Year by Fortune Magazine. At the start of 2021, Musk was ranked as the world’s wealthiest person.
In August of 2013, Musk discussed the concept of Hyperloop – an extremely fast and affordable transportation system using a huge vacuum-sealed tube or a device of connected vacuum-sealed tubes with barely any air pressure or resistance.
This concept has been widely promoted by Musk and SpaceX, as well as other companies that have been encouraged to work together to develop it. Musk revealed that he thought of the concept when he was thinking of a “fifth model of transportation.”
His Relationship with PayPal
Founded by Musk, X.com, which later evolved into PayPal, was the source of this billionaire’s initial fortune. He co-founded X.com back in 1999, and it was later purchased by eBay for a whopping $1.5 billion.
In total, Elon Musk made about $180 million from this deal. His net worth skyrocketed and opened more doors for him to invest in additional endeavors. All in all, we’re glad things worked out that way and we’re curious to see what else Musk has up his sleeve.
How Musk Met Grimes
This bizarre yet fascinating couple met via Twitter thanks to their fondness for nerdy jokes. The two both made the same geeky joke about AI and Rococo. I’m not really sure what the joke was, but it brought them together and that’s the most important bit of all.
A source told Page Six: “Elon was researching the idea of joking about Rococo Basilisk, and when he saw Grimes had already joked about it, he reached out to her. [In response] Grimes said this was the first time in three years that anyone understood the joke. They were both poking fun at AI.”
A while later, word came out that the couple had been “quietly dating.” The very same day that Page Six reported the exciting news, the pair casually showed up at the 2018 Met Gala – together. That’s right, the crowd went wild.
Just before making their public debut, Musk referenced their private joke on his Twitter account. And then, a few months later, in the summer of 2018, Grimes showed up to Musk’s SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition.
Grimes Was “Simply Unprepared”
When word came out that the two were dating, Grimes admitted that she was truly overwhelmed by all the public scrutiny that came along with it. She sat for a chat with the Wall Street Journal and revealed her feelings on the topic:
“I just thought I could keep going along in my funny little way, and then you casually respond to someone in a tweet and it’s on Fox News, and you’re like, ‘Ugh,’ you know? That was a very disturbing moment.”
Grimes Reveals Her Belly
In 2020, Grimes posted an Instagram photo that caused a whirlwind of responses. It was a picture of herself and her belly, revealing that she was pregnant. Everyone instantly started cracking jokes and memes flooded the internet.
A while later, Grimes starred on the cover of Rolling Stone, belly and all, looking pregnant and glorious as ever, and let everyone know in the interview that Elon Musk is indeed the father of her child. Finally, the baby boy was born, and named – X Æ A-12 Musk.
Elon and Grimes’ Mom’s Beef
Grimes’s mother, Sandy Garossino, got mad at Elon Musk after he tweeted some ridiculous post, telling his followers to “take the red pill.” Sandy took to Twitter herself and posted something that got people talking. She tweeted:
“If your partner went through a challenging pregnancy and childbirth in the last two weeks… and you were over 16 years old, would you be blaring MRA bullshit on Twitter right now?” Yikes.
Their Baby’s Name Was Illegal
I think we can all agree that Grimes’ and Elon’s choice for their baby’s name is truly outrageous. But even more outrageous is that the state of California banned it. The state told the parents that their newborn baby cannot be named that way.
As it turns out, naming someone X Æ A-12 is pretty much illegal. So, the parents thought of creative ways to work around it and guessed what they changed it to? X Æ A-Xii. Basically, they swapped the 12. In fact, we think it looks better that way!
Elon Musk got into an icky situation with Grimes after he tweeted something about how pronouns suck. Grimes was understandably enraged by her partner’s insensitive tweet (although he could have just meant that pronouns don’t need to exist, and in that case, he’s kind of on the side of the people fighting to change it.
In any case, Grimes stepped in and tweeted in response “I love you but please turn off ur phone or give me a [c]all. I cannot support hate. Please stop this. I know this isn’t your heart.” After a few moments, she deleted the tweet.
Babies Are “Eating and Pooping Machines”
In an intimate conversation with the New York Times, Elon Musk shared details about parenthood with Grimes. Basically, he told the paper that he wasn’t doing much in the early stages of their boy’s life.
“Well, babies are just eating and pooping machines, you know?” he told the outlet. “Right now, there’s not much I can do. Grimes has a much bigger role than me right now. When the kid gets older, there will be more of a role for me.”
Is Elon Musk Married?
As of now, no.
Page Six released a statement, shattering fans worldwide, that Elon and Grimes had officially broken up. Musk told the paper that he and Grimes “are semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently, and are on great terms.”
He then added: “It’s mostly that my work at SpaceX and Tesla requires me to be primarily in Texas or traveling overseas and her work is primarily in L.A. She’s staying with me now and Baby X is in the adjacent room.”
Back Together AND New Baby!
Not only did Grimes and Elon get back together, but in 2021, they welcomed a new child! A baby girl whom they nicknamed Y. The surprise baby was welcomed via a surrogate. Grimes revealed this to the press and added that she considered Elon to be her boyfriend, though there’s no “real word” to describe what they have.
“We’re very fluid,” she revealed. “We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time.…We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it.” As for more kids? She said: “We’ve always wanted at least three or four.”
Grimes and Chelsea
In 2022, it was reported that Grimes started to date the infamous whistleblower, Chelsea Manning. Page Six reported that they were getting serious. “They’ve been living together in Austin,” one source told the news.
The source added that Chelsea Manning still has her apartment in Brooklyn but has been spending more and more time with Grimes. Neither Manning nor Grimes have responded to the news. But they’ve been interacting on Twitter. We can’t wait to see how this unfolds!
