Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Zoe Kravitz

Born into the Hollywood Life

Zoe’s father is the famous musician, Lenny Kravitz, who is best known for his rock music that brings together different styles and has famously won numerous Grammy Awards. So, it’s easy to see where Zoe gets so much of her talent!

The Early Years

Zoe Kravitz is a native Californian, born in Los Angeles. When she was five years old, her parents, Bonet and Kravitz, divorced, after which Zoe remained in California with her mother. However, she still maintained a close relationship with her father.

At age 11, Zoe decided it was time to try living with a different parent, so she packed up and moved to Miami to live with her father. She has many memories of her famous dad picking her up from school, and how strange it was when her classmates recognized him.

Showing Pride in Her Roots

Zoe has always been proud of her mixed heritage. Both of her parents come from families of mixed African American and Jewish heritage, which Zoe chooses to embrace. Connecting to her family history is something that Lenny Kravitz felt was important for his daughter.

In an interview with Allure magazine, Zoe shared how she’s continuously connecting to her heritage. She said, “The more I experience life, I am identifying more and more with being black and what that means — being more proud of that and feeling connected to my history.”

Inheriting Dad’s Musical Talent

Love for family history isn’t the only thing that Zoe shares with her father, she’s also inherited some of his musical talent. Deciding to try her hand at the music industry, Zoe founded the band Elevator Fight in 2009, but it unfortunately dissolved after a short time.

She gave music another go, and founded a band called Lolawolf, which has had a fair bit of success. They often do tours, and released their debut album, Calm Down, in 2014. She even has a solo album in the works.

The Youngest Family Members

Zoe Kravitz’s band name, Lolawolf, sounds strange, sure, but the truth is that there’s a reason behind the unique name. She named the band after her two younger half siblings from her mother’s relationship with actor Jason Momoa, Lola and Nakoa-Wolf.

As her band name suggests, Zoe shares a strong bond with her little brother and sister despite the age difference. In fact, the whole family strives to be close and cultivate positive relationships with each other, including her dad and stepfather.

Her Famous Godparents

With famous parents comes famous family friends, and that includes some famous godparents for Zoe. Her godmother is one of Lisa Bonet’s close friends, the wonderful actress Marisa Tomei, who Zoe herself considers to be one of the strong female role models in her life.

Besides being strong, Zoe also recalls Tomei being incredibly funny, and stressed how important humor and laughter was in her home growing up, including among her role models. Her godfather is also in the film industry and is a well-known producer named Bruce Cohen.

The Beginning of a Career

Zoe Kravitz didn’t just want to follow in her father’s footsteps, she embraced both of her parents’ careers. In 2007, she first kicked off her acting career when she played a babysitter hired by Catherine Zeta Jones in the film, No Reservations.

From there, she continued to take on small roles as her star continued to rise. In the following years, she appeared in films such as The Brave One, The Greatest, and It’s Kind of a Funny Story. She even had a part in a Jay Z music video.

Almost Ditched the Famous Last Name

For many people, when they hear the name Kravitz, they instantly associate it with Zoe’s father, Lenny Kravitz. This was something that Zoe was always aware of, so when she made her own foray into the entertainment industry, she considered leaving the name out.

However, Zoe eventually realized that there was no way to separate herself from her well-known last name, and worse, that it would disappoint her father. On the podcast Armchair Expert, she said, “I did use to be really insecure about people just associating me with my family and now I love it.”

The Big Break Arrives

While Zoe had been getting several roles for a few years, her breakout year was certainly in 2011. It was then that Zoe was in the blockbuster hit, X-Men: First Class, as Angel Salvadore, a role which she received acknowledgment for at both the Teen Choice and Scream Awards.

From there, it was clear to everyone that Zoe was not just in the industry because of her parents’ connections. That same year, she also had a recurring role on popular tv series, Californication, and a role in the film Yelling to the Sky.

Adding to Her Acting Resume

After her big break in 2011, Zoe Kravitz established herself as a prominent actress. This was made very clear when she was cast as Christina in the Divergent franchise in 2014, and then went on to star in the independent drama, The Road Within, that same year.

From there, Zoe joined the spinoff of the Harry Potter series, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. In 2017, she starred in the acclaimed series, Big Little Lies, which earned her nominations for a Screen Actors Guild Award and Black Reel Awards.

Three Careers Are Better Than One

Making music and being a fabulous actress aren’t the only exciting parts of Zoe Kravitz’s career. She has also done quite a bit of modeling work, and with her striking looks and talent it’s easy to see why this would be a natural step in her career.

The prominent fashion designer, Alexander Wang, featured Zoe in one of his campaigns in 2010. Since then, Zoe has earned respect in the fashion world, and has gone on to collaborate with several brands, including Vera Wang, Swarovski, Calvin Klein, Tumi, and more.

Expanding Her Personal Brand

When the opportunity came to expand her own brand by partnering with these well-known designer names, Zoe couldn’t resist the opportunity. In 2013, Zoe worked with Vera Wang on a new fragrance called Preppy Princess, and afterwards she wanted to ensure she was as involved as possible in future campaigns.

Later that year, she joined forces with Swarovski to work on her very own jewelry line. She used her own background as inspiration for the designs, including using her birthstone, turquoise, as well as vintage and ethnic pieces.

Romances Blooming on Set

In Hollywood, it’s a bit of a cliche for actors to end up dating their co-stars, and Zoe Kravitz has certainly not been immune to this. In 2010, she connected with her Beware the Gonzo co-star, Ezra Miller, and the two were seen kissing around town before the romance quickly fizzled out.

Love struck again when she met actor Michael Fassbender on the set of X-Men: First Class, and the two began dating soon after. While their romantic relationship only lasted about a year, they remained good friends.

Love in the City

Not long after her relationship with Fassbender ended, Zoe was seen walking hand in hand around New York City with actor Penn Badgley. Badgley later credited the show Gossip Girl for helping them get together, since the show put him in New York at the same time as Zoe.

The two actors had a strong relationship, with Badgley saying he was “earth shattering in love” with Zoe. This love lasted for two years until the couple called it quits in 2013, but the breakup was both mutual and amicable.

Wedding Bells Were Ringing

Zoe’s next big relationship came in 2016, when she began dating actor Karl Glusman. The two largely kept their relationship low profile, until she announced their engagement in October 2018. Less than a year later, the happy couple celebrated their wedding at her dad’s Paris home.

The wedding was a lavish affair, complete with a designer gown and a star-studded, exclusive guest list. While the two had already officially tied the knot a few months before in a civil ceremony, Zoe wanted to have her “Pretty Princess Day.”

Was the Marriage Cursed from the Start?

Unfortunately, 18 months after Zoe and Glusman said “I do,” the couple filed for divorced, which was finalized in August 2021. While Zoe has been fairly tight-lipped about the end of her marriage, many have speculated as to the cause.

Some believe that perhaps the marriage was cursed from day one, and that the over-the-top wedding may have been a sign of trouble. There were criticisms that Zoe’s dress choice indicated some lackluster feelings, and the couple chose some controversial wedding trends to include.

Post-Divorce Rumors and Romance

As soon as word got out that Zoe was getting divorced, many wondered if she was dating anyone new. Not long after the divorce was finalized, she was seen with actor Channing Tatum, leading many to speculate if the two were dating, and that Tatum may have played a role in the divorce itself.

These rumors were quickly squashed, with sources close to Zoe insisting that the two actors are not romantically involved in any way. However, they are working together on an upcoming project, which will also be Zoe’s directorial debut.

Rumors on the Batman Set

Since Zoe has dated co-stars before, many have wondered if that’s a habit she might return to post-divorce. With her 2022 role in The Batman, starring opposite actor Robert Pattinson, some have wondered if the two have started up a new romance.

Despite the two actors sharing some incredible on-screen chemistry in their new film, sources who worked with them on set have denied any rumors that there was an off-screen romance brewing. However, there is a possibility that they are in talks to work on a future project together.

Break Ups in the Family

Zoe hasn’t been the only one in her family having a rough year in the romance department. In fact, her mother, Lisa Bonet, has also made headlines recently after announcing her split with actor Jason Momoa.

Bonet and Momoa have been married four years but have been together since 2005. Momoa is also the father of Zoe’s two siblings, Lola and Nakoa-Wolf, and they have all been close as a blended family. They released a statement saying, “The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived.”

Instagram Exchange With Jason Momoa

Besides her siblings, Zoe has always maintained a close and positive relationship with her stepfather. And that certainly hasn’t changed despite his recent breakup with her mother, which was made clear by their recent Instagram exchange.

When Zoe shared the new poster for The Batman on her Instagram, Momoa didn’t hesitate to respond with heart and fire emojis. He even took it one step further by sharing the poster himself on his own Instagram, with the caption, “So proud. Can’t wait… Love u zozo.”

Lisa Bonet Knew What She Wanted for Her Babies

It’s safe to say that the Bonet-Kravitz family are not afraid of doing things their own way and finding what works for them. And when it came to Bonet giving birth to Zoe, that’s exactly how it went down as well.

While home births have grown in popularity, back in the ‘80s when Bonet was pregnant, it was still considered a bit unusual. But that didn’t stop Bonet from sticking to her guns, and sure enough Zoe was born via home birth, a process that Bonet repeated for her other children later on.

To Go to College or Not?

While some children of celebrities might have private tutors or attend special schools, Zoe attended a regular school like any other kid. She went to Miami Country Day School, and then later moved to New York, where she graduated from Rudolf Steiner School in 2007.

After graduating from high school, Zoe decided to give higher education a chance. She was accepted to, and attended, State University of New York, for one year. However, she ultimately decided to leave college behind and move to Brooklyn so she could focus more on her career.

Just Like Any Other Kid

In addition to attending schools like a regular kid, Kravitz and Bonet wanted to make sure that their daughter had as normal a childhood as possible. They were worried about how growing up with paid help or extra privileges might impact Zoe.

So, they did what many parents would do, they gave their daughter chores. Zoe had to regularly do chores in the house, and felt it kept her down to earth. This continued later on, and when she attended college she lived in the dorms and participated in university life.

Facing Racism in the Industry

While having famous parents might have paved the way for Zoe in Hollywood, it has not made her immune to facing racism in the industry. She has felt that initially her roles were limited to being the “Black friend,” and complained that many sets only had light colored makeup available for her.

She has also shared that years ago, when she sought an audition for The Dark Knight Rises, she was denied the opportunity based on her skin color. Zoe was told that they didn’t want an “urban” look.

She Spoke Out During the Me Too Movement

Racism isn’t the only topic that Zoe has strongly spoken out against. In the wake of the Me Too movement, Zoe has also come forward about harassment she faced on a set when she was younger.

In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Zoe shared that she once worked with a director who made her feel “very uncomfortable” on set, although she declined to name the perpetrator. She went on to say, “It’s just never OK for someone to do that. Especially when they’re in a .”

Fate Intervened to Save Her on Tour

Zoe Kravitz has done a lot of touring with her band, Lolawolf, but in April 2015, there was a particularly memorable moment. Her band was opening for another band called Twin Shadows and were supposed to be on their bus when a lucky twist of fate occurred.

Unfortunately, the bus that the headlining band were on ended up getting into a major crash, which resulted in serious injuries for those on board. Zoe called the incident “crazy,” and had been shaken up by the near miss.

Taking Up the Catwoman Mantle

Fans everywhere are highly anticipating seeing Zoe take on the role of Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, in The Batman, but she’s not the first to take on the role. Zoe is now joining the ranks of powerhouse actresses such as Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway, and more.

Zoe also shares a special connection to former Catwoman actress Julie Newmar. The two of them are the only actresses who can claim they have been Catwoman both in animation and live action, as Zoe voiced the character in the Lego Batman Movie.

Penchant for Getting into the Big Franchises

With her role in The Batman, Zoe is officially joining the larger DC Comics franchise. It has not escaped the attention of her fans that Zoe seems to have a habit of working in large franchises such as this one.

Zoe has also established herself with Marvel comic fans when she starred in X-Men: First Class, in addition to the Harry Potter and Divergent fandoms. With DC now added to the list, some are wondering which big “nerdy” franchise the actress might find herself joining next.

Her Dedication to the Craft Went Too Far

Many actors and actresses take their jobs very seriously, but sometimes it goes a little too far. Zoe had to learn this the hard way when she dedicated herself to working on the movie The Road Within in 2014, where she played an anorexic character.

Wanting to look the part, Zoe lost 90 pounds for the role, but unfortunately this put her own health at risk. Being underweight led to her immune system shutting down, her voice being affected, and she contracted shingles. Leading to the important lesson of: health first!

Zoe’s Mental Health Battles

Zoe likely related to her role in The Road Within because of her own personal struggles with mental health and eating disorders. She later opened up about her trials with depression and bulimia, which her parents helped her seek treatment for.

In an interview with Complex, Zoe shared that her struggles with eating and body image likely started in high school. But rather than blame fame, she feels that the pressure came from expectations put on women. She calls eating disorders “awful diseases” and is grateful to have recovered.

Every Woman’s Best Friend

Despite all the people in Zoe’s life there was still room for a special type of friend…a pet dog. Zoe adopted a dog named Scout, and she loves him so much that she named a lipstick in her YSL Beauté line, “Scout’s Red,” in his honor.

Zoe has also involved Scout in other aspects of her Hollywood life. She once brought Scout to a Golden Globes party, where he had so much fun that he got loose among the partygoers. Her then husband, Karl Glusman, had to help getting him back.

Famous Friends Stick Together

After making her mark in Hollywood, Zoe has also formed her own tight knit circle of famous friends. Some of those on her list include Chris Pine, Alexander Wang, and X-Men co-star Jennifer Lawrence. But one of her best friends in the industry is pop star Miley Cyrus.

Cyrus and Zoe have a fair bit in common, having both grown up around famous people and with famous musicians for fathers. The two women have formed a strong bond and have even walked the carpet at the Met Gala together.

Not Caring What Others Say

When someone is in the limelight, it’s inevitable that they’ll face their fair share of put downs and internet trolls. Zoe has certainly not been immune to this but tries to have an attitude of not letting it get to her.

Zoe has heard people call her a brat, or that she thinks she’s better than others because of her famous dad. She has said, “It’s an easy dis when people don’t want to like me.” But in reality, it just means that they don’t know her as well as they think.

An Unexpected Famous Relative

Between her famous parents, stepdad, and godparents in her life, Zoe seems overrun with famous relatives. But with her parents’ heritage, there are some unexpected relatives that some might be surprised to learn about. It turns out that she’s related to famous weatherman and anchor, Al Roker.

Roker is related to the Kravitz side of Zoe’s family. The connection goes back several generations, to Lenny Kravitz and Roker’s grandfathers who were first cousins. It just goes to show how surprising a family tree can be.

How Zoe Prefers to Unwind

With a successful career juggling music, acting, and modeling, and her profile continuously growing, Zoe seems to be working non-stop. But everyone needs some downtime, and Zoe has some very specific activities she does to relax.

One of the things many don’t know is that Zoe Kravitz is an avid crocheter, and she loves making things with it, although she occasionally mixes it up by knitting instead. She finds it very relaxing to do while watching Breaking Bad, a show she’s a very big fan of.

A Total Daddy’s Girl

While Zoe is close with her mother, she is also a definite daddy’s girl, something Lenny is very proud of. Despite not always living together following his divorce with Bonet, he has always strived to be a very present and involved father.

To show his love to his daughter, Lenny wrote a song in her honor called Flowers for Zoe. Originally, the song was going to be titled “Zoe’s Lullaby,” because it was originally written as a lullaby for Zoe when she was a baby in 1988.

Her Tattoos and Their Meanings

Zoe felt so connected to her father that she couldn’t resist getting a matching tattoo with him. Lenny tattooed the words “Free At Last” on his arm in reference to overcoming his past, and Zoe wanted to join in.

But that’s not the only tattoo that Zoe has; in fact, she has upwards of 20 all over her body. Outside of the one she shares with her father, she hasn’t gone into detail about the meanings for most of them, but she has dedicated others such as “mama” and “lolawolf” to her family.

A Mirror Image of Mom

Zoe might share a tattoo with her father, but it’s become obvious as she gets older that it’s truly Bonet who she is the spitting image of. In 2016, the mother and daughter joined forces for a Calvin Klein campaign ad, and jaws dropped when audiences saw the similarities.

When Zoe was chosen for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in 2018, she chose to pay homage to her mother by recreating the look that Bonet had done for the cover in 1988. The resemblance certainly could not be denied.

Just Say No to Extra Enhancements

In the world of Hollywood, it’s practically a rite of passage to get some kind of cosmetic work or plastic surgery done. However, Zoe is not a big fan of this trend among celebrities. In fact, she’s even made statements against it.

Zoe’s opinion on the subject made its appearance in 2019, when she heard that Botox was becoming even more popular, and being used to stop sweating. Zoe responded, calling the fad “dumb and dangerous.” She has also noted that she has not done any cosmetic work to her own body.

Being a Fashion Icon

Ever since Zoe began modeling, many have started looking at her to see what high fashion can be. This has been true with the many brands she’s represented, but also with those who now follow what she wears on various red carpets.

Zoe also shows off her looks on her Instagram, where she has over six and a half million followers. In addition to sharing movie posters, she also has shown off all she’s learned from modeling about taking a good picture, and her fans love it.

The Controversial Red Carpet Look

While many look to Zoe for her fashion choices, sometimes the response isn’t what she might have hoped for. This was the case at the 2021 Met Gala where some felt her red carpet look didn’t measure up. Some even went as far to say that she looked “naked” in the dress.

The dress was a Saint Laurent, made with a sheer metal mesh and matching thong. Zoe responded to her critics by stating that people uncomfortable with the human body are “brainwashed.” And said, “It’s just a body. We’ve all got ‘em.”

No Typical Roles for This Actress

Early on in her acting career, Zoe became frustrated by the types of roles people wanted to cast her in. She decided to start refusing any type of role that stereotypes her as a woman of color and told her agent not to show her those scripts.

Zoe felt that she didn’t want to be the “best friend” or a woman living in the ghetto. While she acknowledges those stories can still be important, she felt that she couldn’t relate to them at all on a personal level.

Earning a Reputation in the Industry

While some actors and actresses might earn monikers such as “America’s Sweetheart” or the “Girl who has it all,” Zoe has earned a different kind of reputation. In fact, some call her “The Anti-It Girl.”

Part of this is connected to her refusal to be typecast in the typical roles, and the way she has stood her ground on her feelings in the industry. Zoe wants everyone to know that she is an independent thinker who doesn’t need to prescribe to any preconceived notions of her.

Recognition in the Industry

While most actors will say that they don’t do their job for the acclaim and awards, it certainly doesn’t hurt. Zoe got her first nominations for Teen Choice Awards in 2011 for Choice Movie Breakout and Choice Breakout Performance, and it was only up from there.

In 2016 and 2017 she was nominated for Black Reel Awards for Best Supporting Actress. In 2020 she finally won a Black Reel Award for her work in High Fidelity, and that same year was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Big Little Lies.

Future Projects on the Horizon

With numerous successful films and shows now under her belt, and a divorce now behind her, some may be wondering what’s next for Zoe. Well, she is still working on her music and has plans to release another album in the future.

When it comes to her acting career, 2022 will be a big year for Zoe. In addition to The Batman, she’ll also be in HBO’s new thriller called KIMI. On top of that, Zoe is in the process of directing a new project with Channing Tantum titled “Pussy Island.”
