Not All of Them Are Going to Heaven: 7th Heaven’s Camden Family Today

In the late ‘90s and early 2000s, 7th Heaven was a massive hit. The series focused on the Camden family as they navigated life with societal pressures while trying to maintain their Christian values. For a family-friendly show, 7th Heaven somehow managed to captivate viewers all over the nation with its feel-good storylines and lovable characters. It’s where Jessica Biel rose to fame as a good girl gone bad, Mary Camden, and where Barry Watson became a hunky teen idol for his role as Matt Camden.

It’s been over a decade since the show wrapped, and we said goodbye to the Camdens. While some of the cast members went on to have successful Hollywood careers, others went under the radar. While some of the actors wanted to stay out of the public eye, others were shunned by Hollywood. You will never guess which 7th Heaven star passed away earlier this year.

It’s time to take a trip down memory lane and see where the stars of 7th Heaven are now.

Barry Watson (Matt Camden)

Let’s start with the oldest Camden sibling, Matt, played by Barry Watson. His character was a good-natured boy who was always there for his family and friends. He was definitely a fan favorite, and we watched him navigate normal teenage life while being the son of the minister. And, at the end of the day, he always did the right thing.

But it was the actor’s good looks that got the ladies swooning in the early 2000s. Watson was a TV heartthrob and on the cover of all the teen magazines. However, in the later seasons, he was struggling with some personal issues and stopped being a recurring character. However, he did continue to make guest appearances.

Barry Watson Now

Barry Watson left 7th Heaven as a cast regular when he was diagnosed with Hodkin’s Lymphoma. Ever since he has appeared in smaller TV shows and made for TV movies. These days, he’s got some acting gigs here and there but nothing as successful as his 7th Heaven glory.

When it comes to his personal life, Watson was married three times. He has two sons, Oliver and Phelix, with his longtime partner Tracy Hudson. The couple got divorced in 2011, and in 2012 Watson married Natasha Gregson Wagner, who happens to be the daughter of actress Natalie Wood. They have a daughter named Clover.

Beverley Mitchell (Lucy Camden)

Beverly Mitchell made a name for herself for her role as Lucy Camden, the emotional sister who always felt left out. Her acting was incredible on the show, and we got to watch her character transition from a dramatic 12-year-old to a mature mother and stable adult. Lucy grew up to be a minister, just like her dad.

As for Mitchell, the actress herself grew up on the screen. She was a cute, little aspiring actress when she started off, and the whole world watched her blossom into a beautiful young woman. She stayed on the series until the very end. But after that, she kind of kept a low profile.

Beverly Mitchell Now

After 7th Heaven, Mitchell had a recurring role in The Secret Life of an American Teenager from 2011-2013. She is still good friends with her 7th Heaven co-stars, especially Mackenzie Rosman and Jessica Biel. In fact, in 2008, when Mitchell tied the knot with Michael Cameron, her TV sisters served as her bridesmaids.

In 2017, Mitchell starred in a series called Hollywood Darlings, where she played an exaggerated version of herself alongside fellow ‘90s child stars, Jodie Sweetin (from Full House) and Christine Lakin (from Step by Step). If you’re interested in what she is up to now, follow her on Instagram, where she is always posting pictures of her adorable kids.

Mackenzie Rosman (Ruthie Camden)

Ruthie Camden was the adorable youngest Camden when the show began but eventually got little twin brothers. The sassy character was smart and beautiful, just like the actress who played her, Mackenzie Rosman. While she starred in the hit family show (and after), she focused on philanthropy work.

Her step-sister Katelyn Salmont had a tough battle with Cystic Fibrosis until she died of the condition in 2008. While she was fighting, and ever since she passed away, Rosman has been incredibly involved with Cystic Fibrosis awareness. She is also an ambassador for Childhelp Inc., an organization that helps abused children.

Mackenzie Rosman Now

Although she is best known for her role as Ruthie, Rosman continued to dabble in the industry after the show. Like her on-screen sister, Rosman also appeared in The Secret Life of an American Teenager, where she played the role of Zoe in four episodes. Other than that, she had a couple of movie roles, but her latest on-screen role was in the television film Ghost Shark.

Leaving the spotlight seems to have been the actress’s decision. Rosman has many interests other than just her acting skills. She loves horses and is even a competitive equestrienne show jumper. We saw her character Ruthie ride horses on 7th Heaven, but it turned out to be her real-life hubby.

David Gallagher (Simon Camden)

David Gallagher portrayed the clever, kind-hearted Simon. He was the middle kid in the 7th Heaven clan who always seemed to have a good head on his shoulders. Like most kids, his character went through different phases, and we got to watch him evolve from an adorable 10-year-old to a well-mannered gentleman.

In the early 2000s, Gallagher rose to prominence as a teen heartthrob, thanks to his role on the show. He actually got his start in the industry at the age of 2, and the role of Simon was just his big break. The actor did a fantastic job playing a character struggling between his desires and his morals; we can’t imagine anyone else as Simon.

David Gallagher Now

Like Beverly Mitchell and Jessica Biel, Gallagher is one of the 7th Heaven actors who has had a pretty active career in the industry since the show’s finale. He made several appearances on shows like CSI: NY, CSI: Miami, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Vampire Diaries, Smallville, and Bones. His most recent appearance was in an episode of S.W.A.T. in 2020.

He isn’t as significant in Hollywood as he used to be, but he is still around. The reason why you haven’t seen him around is because he too has been focusing on a different interest: video games. Gallagher has always had a love for video games and has played Riku in the Kingdom of Hearts franchise from 2002-2020.

Catherine Hicks (Annie Camden)

Annie Camden was basically the world’s greatest mom. I mean, she was always baking cookies, doing laundry, solving everyone’s problems, while still managing to raise seven children and cook dinner almost every single night. As sweet and gentle as she was, she was also involved in instilling morals and values into her children.

The actress who portrayed the TV super mom is the one and only Catherine Hicks. She began her acting career in the late ‘70s and worked pretty consistently throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s. Like many of her 7th Heaven co-stars, her big break was on the successful family show.

Catherine Hicks Now

In addition to her memorable role as Annie Camden, Catherine Hicks has had a pretty successful acting career. She appeared in a number of TV shows, and movies, including the critically- acclaimed 2009 film My Name is Jerry. Hicks won the Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the International Filmmakers Festival for her performance.

After 7th Heaven ended, Hicks returned to the stage for live theater and earned positive reviews in 2010 for her part as Hildegarde in the play Why Torture Is Wrong and the People Who Love Them. Other than that, she has been working steadily in the industry, and, at 69 years old, she still looks incredible.

Jessica Biel (Mary Camden)

Jessica Biel seems to have had the most prolific career of all the actors in 7th Heaven. The gorgeous actress was relatively unknown when she made her Mary Camden debut at age 14. Her character was the second oldest kid who takes on a lot of responsibility and is a good influence on her younger siblings… until Season five rolled around.

Biel was getting tired of playing a goody-two-shoes character, especially since she wasn’t that way in real life. Her real-life “scandalous” behavior of posing nude didn’t match her Christian girl’s image, and it ultimately got her kicked off the show. Even though she returned as Mary in some episodes in the later seasons, she never came back as a series regular.

Jessica Biel Now

Instead, Jessica Biel went on to bigger and better things. She transitioned into movies and starred in The Rules of Attraction, Blade: Trinity, Stealth, The Illusionist, The A-Team, Total Recall, and more. In 2017, the actress was nominated for a Golden Globe for her amazing performance as Cora Tannetti in the television miniseries The Sinner.

Biel is known for her beauty, acting talent, and getting hitched to musical heartthrob Justin Timberlake. She is definitely a lucky lady. She tied the knot with the singer in 2012, and in 2015 they welcomed baby Silas Randall Timberlake into the world. These days, the actress also owns the children’s restaurant, Au Fudge.

Tyler Hoechlin (Martin Brewer)

Although he didn’t come along until later seasons, Martin Brewer became a regular cast member on 7Th Heaven, despite not technically being part of the family. Martin, played by Tyler Hoechlin, was kind of an attractive “bad boy” who moves in with the Camden family, and they help him straighten out his life.

He first showed up in Season 8, and it didn’t take long for him to charm viewers everywhere with his heart-melting smile. Even little Ruthie developed a crush on Martin, and, honestly, who could blame her? His character was such a fan favorite that he became a series regular until the end of the show.

Tyler Hoechlin Now

7th Heaven was certainly a step in the right direction for Tyler Hoechlin’s acting career. Whether it was his acting skills or dashing good looks, it was clear that Tyler belonged in Hollywood. He took on many notable roles throughout the years, including Derek Hale, a series regular on Teen Wolf. He has also been portrayed Superman since 2016 in the CW hit series Supergirl!

He has been actively working as an actor since his 7th Heaven run and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. He continues to appear as Superman in shows like The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and will be starring in the upcoming series Superman & Lois.

Andrew Keegan (Wilson West)

In Season one of 7th Heaven, we were introduced to the attractive and charming Wilson West. He played May’s love interest, and the role helped actor Andrew Keegan rise to fame in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. His character seemed to be a stand-up guy, but it was quickly revealed that he was actually a teen dad, raising a toddler on his own.

Even though his character is a responsible father, babies out of wedlock were considered pretty scandalous on a show like 7th Heaven. Teenage girls all over America fell head over heels for the actor, and he was even featured in a movie starring several other 2000s heart-throbs: 10 Things I Hate About You.

Andrew Keegan Now

In addition to 10 Things I Hate About You, the actor starred in other memorable movies during his time on 7th Heaven, like The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy. Although he has kept a low profile in Hollywood, the actor has been steadily working in the industry since his time on the show, in both movies and television.

In 2015, Keegan got caught up in a little bit of scandal. He formed a spiritual group called “Full Circle,” which was raided by officers from the California Alcohol Beverage Control board for serving Kombucha. The spiritual center ultimately closed down in 2017. As for his personal life, Keegan has one daughter, Aiya Rose.

Ashlee Simpson (Cecilia Smith)

Back in the early 2000s, Ashlee Simpson was on top of the world. She was a famous singer, so it only made sense that she was featured in a hit teen family drama. However, many people seem to forget that Simpson played a recurring character on 7th Heaven named Cecilia, Simon’s love interest.

But Ashlee didn’t just show up as a guest star. The singer was a cast regular for two seasons and appeared in a whopping 40 episodes. After Cecilia and Simon broke up, her character stayed around and got close to the Camden family until it was time for her to go to college. In real life, Ashlee had a blossoming music career to focus on.

Ashlee Simpson Now

Simpson was at the height of her career around the time she was on 7th Heaven. The actress had a notable time in Hollywood but seemed to have been forgotten in later years. She has kept a low profile since her time on the show, Simpson married Fall Out Boy singer Pete Wentz, but the pair got divorced about four years later.

Now, she is married to Evan Ross, the son of Diana Ross, and the couple looks extremely happy together. Simson has two children, the first with her ex, Wentz, and the second with her current husband, Ross. When asked if she would return to acting, Ashlee said she wants to concentrate on her singing career.

Rachel Blanchard (Roxanne Richardson)

Roxanne Richardson showed up in later seasons to stir things up. After she became Kevin’s police officer partner, Roxanne became the subject of Lucy’s jealously. Lucy was married to Kevin, and her insecurity was something the character struggled with since she was a little girl.

To be fair, though, Roxanne was a pretty threatening, bad@ss blonde, portrayed by the gorgeous Rachel Blanchard. All the boys were chasing her, so it’s no wonder Lucy wanted to keep her man close. After Lucy’s initial jealousy, she came around and became friends with Roxy. Even while she was on 7th Heaven, the actress kept a low profile and has continued to do so, even though she is still acting.

Rachel Blanchard Now

After 7th Heaven, Blanchard continued to land roles in both movies and television shows. She was featured in comedy sketches like the award-winning British comedy series Peep Show, and the HBO show Flight of the Conchords. You may also recognize her from her recurring role as Kitty in Season, one of the hit series Fargo.

Even though she is mostly remembered for playing Roxy, she continued to maintain a name for herself in Hollywood by showing up on high-quality television since 7th Heaven ended. These days, you can find her starring as Emma Trakarsky in the series You Me Her, since 2016. If that isn’t impressive enough, can you believe the actress is 44 years old and looks this amazing?!

Haylie Duff (Sandy Jameson)

If you were around in the early 2000s, you remember how Hilary Duff was a Tween sweetheart. That’s why fans were so excited when her real-life sister Haylie Duff snagged the role of Sandy on 7th Heaven. Haylie managed to step out of her sister’s shadow and tackle the character of a pregnant college student, and the father was none other than Martin Brewer.

Her character’s introduction definitely stirred up a lot of drama, especially for Ruthie and Martin’s relationship. Although she’s not as famous as her sister, she certainly did an incredible job with the part of Sandy, and it’s arguably her most notable role to date.

Haylie Duff Now

Since her days on 7th Heaven, Haylie continued to appear on TV shows as well as movies. She appeared in Napoleon Dynamite, and two made for TV movies: Love Takes Wing, and its sequel Love Finds a Home. Besides acting, Haylie makes time to pursue other interests outside of acting.

Duff is actually insanely talented. She started a children’s fashion line, a cookbook, and even had a pretty successful singing career. Haylie hosted the reality television show Legally Blonde the Musical: The Search for Elle Woods, back in 2008. This may seem a bit random, but this is right up Haylie’s alley, considering she has experience starring on Broadway.

Happy (Happy the Dog)

In the show’s first episode, Simon is obnoxiously begging his parents for a dog. Even though they refused, he continued to annoy them until they finally told him that if a dog magically appeared on their lawn, he could have it. Praying for a miracle, Happy shows up (after his mom secretly brings him home).

Even though the entire family immediately falls in love with Happy, it’s clear that Simon had the strongest bond with the cute doggy. In Season 2, we find out that Happy had previous owners, and the family almost lost her. Luckily, Happy chose the Camdens over her old family, so she wasn’t going anywhere.

Happy (Happy the Dog)

As you can imagine, the dog actor’s real name was also Happy, which was obviously used not to confuse the dog and to get him to cooperate. America quickly fell in love with the loving, friendly Happy, who was actually rescued from a California dog shelter. She brought smiles to the faces of 7th Heaven viewers for 11 seasons.

You are probably wondering what happened to the adorable mixed terrier. Did she continue her career as a doggy actor? Did she retire? Unfortunately, the dog hung up her acting shoes after the show wrapped. According to IMDB, Happy died of natural causes in 2010, which is completely heartbreaking (she was 15 years old).

Lorenzo and Nikolas Brino (Sam and David Camden)

If you were a 7th Heaven fan, you definitely remember Sam and David, identical twin boys who were born in Season 3 of the show, as number 6 and 7 of the 7th Heaven clan. What you may not know is that, in real life, the twins are actually non-identical quadruplets. Because of child labor laws, all four child actors played the two twins.

In later seasons, the four became two, and Lorenzo took on the role of Sam, while one of his brothers, Nikolas Brino, played David. The other two brothers are Myrinda Bino and Zachary Brino. It is unclear why Lorenzo and Nikolas were chosen to join the cast and not Myrinda and Zachary. My guess is that they probably felt more comfortable in front of a camera.

Lorenzo Brino

After the show, the brothers kept a low profile. Their parents thought it would be better to raise them away from the limelight. If you could believe it, the quadruplets recently celebrated their 22nd birthday, but one of them was tragically missing from the celebration. In a heartbreaking turn of events, Lorenzo died in a car accident on March 9th, 2020.

Reportedly, the 21-year-old former actor lost control of his car and hit a utility pole. Just when you thought 2020 couldn’t get any worse. This was a devastating loss for the family and 7th Heaven fans whose hearts melted for the adorable TV twins.

Nikolas Brino

When Sam and David were welcomed into the Camden family, it was one of the most-watched episodes of the show! Just like his brother, Nikolas didn’t do much acting after 7th Heaven. Although he didn’t pursue his career as a child star, according to his social media accounts, Nikolas is a Los Angeles based actor.

We hope to see him his familiar, adorable smiling face in any upcoming movies or TV shows. However, since his only acting gig was alongside his late brothers, we understand if he wants to take a break. If I were in his position, I would quit acting altogether. We just want the family to heal, and hope they get through Lorenzo’s heartbreaking loss.

Stephen Collins (Eric Camden)

Steven Collins was arguably the star of the show. He portrayed the wholesome family dad, Reverend Eric Camden. The Reverend was always there for his family, as well as other members of the community, and, above all, he always did the right thing. Eric Camden had strong beliefs and values and always tried to pass them on to his children.

Collins played the role of Eric from the start of the show until the season finale. The father of seven was a strict, involved parent with a kind, loving heart and gentle soul. Well… the character, at least. The actor, on the other hand, has been involved in quite the scandal since the show ended.

Stephen Collins Now

In 2014, Collins found himself in the midst of a Hollywood scandal when audiotapes of him came out, confessing to his therapist about relations he had had with minors. Supposedly, the tapes were leaked by his now-ex-wife, and it didn’t go over well. Later that year, the actor admitted that he did, in fact, have relations with under-aged girls on three separate occasions: in 1973, 1982, and 1994.

Photo by Matt Baron / BEI / Shutterstock

He hasn’t appeared in anything since 2013, and, needless to say, he will never work in Hollywood again. In 2017, 7th Heaven’s Brenda Hampton strangely said that she would welcome Collins back to the show for a reunion. Ummm… didn’t his character have a heart condition? I think they could easily kill him off and reboot the show!
